About 'Sam Trek'

Introduction

(You can also view my introductory video for a little more background. )

I was raised on Star Trek.  Born into a family that included parents who had watched Star Trek in the common rooms of their college dormitories in the late 1960s, I was weaned on re-runs of that original show and the films of the 1980s that featured the TOS cast.

I always loved them, and when Star Trek: The Next Generation aired in 1987, Trek officially became a family affair.  We watched TNG and its successors every week, and I grew into the die-hard Trekkie that I am today.

The idea for Sam Trek was born in the late evening hours of February 13th, 2013, when I realized that I had--between Netflix streaming and my personal DVD collection--access to every Star Trek episode and film ever released.  What if I watched them all, in order?

The Mission

So that's my mission.  I will watch ALL OF THE TREK in a roughly chronological order*:

* - My definition of "roughly chronological order" means that I will watch each of the Star Trek series as a whole, in the order in which they were produced/aired (basically the order in which they appear if you look at any of the Trek series in Netflix), and then watch any feature films that feature that cast.  This means that I won't watch Enterprise first because it comes first in the in-universe chronology of Trek, and it means that I won't be bouncing around between movies and films to watch things either in the order the occurred in Trek mythology, or in the order they were produced/aired.
** - The second installment of J.J. Abrams' re-boot trilogy will not only have been released by the time I'm finished with this "mission" (and I will, no doubt, see it in the theater about a half-dozen times), but it will also be released on DVD/BR by the time I'm done.  So I should be able to wrap up this experiment with an at-home viewing of the most recent film at that time (sometime in February 2014).

Questions?

Here are some questions I can anticipate being asked:

  1. What's with the abbreviations (e.g. "TOS" or "DS9")?

    These are commonly-used abbreviations for the various Star Trek series and films.  Here's a summary...

    "TOS" = Star Trek: The Original Series
    "TAS" = Star Trek: The Animated Series
    "TNG" = Star Trek: The Next Generation
    "DS9" = Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
    "VOY" = Star Trek: Voyager
    "ENT" = Star Trek: Enterprise

    "ST1" or "TMP" = Star Trek: The Motion Picture
    "ST2" or "TWoK" = Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan
    "ST3" or "TSFS" = Star Trek III: The Search For Spock
    "ST4" or "TVH" = Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
    "ST5" or "TFF" = Star Trek V: The Final Frontier
    "ST6" or "TUC" = Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
    "ST7" or "GEN" = Star Trek: Generations
    "ST8" or "FC" = Star Trek: First Contact
    "ST9" or "INS" = Star Trek: Insurrection
    "ST10" or "NEM" = Star Trek: Nemesis

    "ST2009" or "ST09" = Star Trek
    "ST2013" or "STID" = Star Trek Into Darkness

  2. What's your favorite series/movie/captain/ship/villain?

    My favorite series: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
    My favorite movie: Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan
    My favorite captain: Captain Sisko, with Kirk and Picard tied for a close second
    My favorite ship: USS Excelsior
    My favorite villain: Khan Noonien Singh
A note on episode numbering...

My notations on which episodes are which (e.g. "S01E01") are based on the episode numbering as the series are presented in Netflix.  I realize that "The Cage" isn't generally considered a part of TOS S1, for example; or that many of the episodes were aired out-of-ordered compared with when they were filmed (e.g. "The Man Trap" is listed as the 5th episode of TOS S1 on Memory-Alpha, because of when it was shot).  For simplicity's sake, I'll be sticking with Netflix's numbering which is--more or less--the order in which the episodes were aired.
