Your emphasis on the kirk-Spock-McCoy relationship makes me want to revisit them, also. As a (sometimes) Starship Modeler, of course, my eye is always about the spaceships.
One of the things that got me is that when I watched the NextGen premiere, I figured everything was CGI; and subsequently I learned it was model-based, at least at first.
